Jesse R. Sears (1818-1877) was appointed the first Bass River Township Superintendent of Schools in 1864 when Bass River Township was formed from Little Egg Harbor Township. The son of Joseph Sears and Achsah Leek, he married Lydia Mathis (1822-1900). They had four children- Mary, b 1837; Sabra, b 1848; Benjamin, b 1843; and Walter, b 1859. Jesse and Lydia are both buried in Miller Cemetery.
